International Women’s Day was on the 8th of March this year, and I thought I’d take a moment to reflect on how much times have changed in the industry over the years. As a product of 1970’s and 80’s education I’m amazed, and pleased at how different things are now. We still have a way to go to achieve equality, but we are getting there.
I started working for Brimonn in 1994 as a secretary. I was keen to learn about the different products. I had many conversations with customers and our sales staff which were really educational. In early 1999 it was mentioned that we were advertising for another Internal Sales Person and I asked why they hadn’t considered me for the position, having been essentially taking orders and chatting to customers for the past 5 years. It was met with some surprise that I would want to do the job, and a little concern that the customers (men) wouldn’t want to talk to me as a female, but ultimately it was agreed that I would move into the Sales Office.
In May 1999, Carrie-ann joined us to take over the secretarial duties, and in 2002 she joined me in the sales office. Eventually I went into Field Sales and with Lisa covering the North, me covering the South and Carrie-ann overseeing the Sales Office it became a very female orientated organisation. I was once asked if it was a ‘thing’ to have females on the road. I explained that we had done our time in the office, knew our products and were simply the best fit for the job. It was totally organic.
Eventually the person and their ability to fill a role, not the gender, race or any other factor, will be all that is important. That day is getting closer and. with so many women filling top positions, we now have role models for future generations to look up to. Well done to everyone, male and female, who is involved with this change.
I’m back in the office now, with Carrie-ann, and we are happy to pass on our experience to anyone who needs advice about screening.
